How to Reach Asangaon

Reaching Asangaon is not a tough day's work anymore. 

By Train: Asangaon is a station on the Central Railway line (Mumbai-Kasara route). Local trains take about an hour and a half to two hours to get there from CST or Dadar. 

By Car: The Eastern Express Highway then takes you onto NH-160; it is a very beautiful drive, especially during the rainy days. 

Just a Tip: For Mumbai people, take an early morning local train; you will not see much of a crowd and see a pretty sunrise while traveling.

First Impressions: Fresh Air and Green Views

Just step out of the station, and a calm atmosphere welcomes you: the air feels fresher, the roads quieter, and the surroundings filled with greenery. It is not a rowdy nor crowded tourist spot unlike other popular places; it is a place worth spending a slow, relaxed day savoring.

Nature Trails and Small Treks

1. Mahuli Fort Trek

This is one of the major attractions near Asangaon. Perched atop a hill surrounded by dense forests, this fort is a must-see before you leave Asangaon.

• Difficulty: Moderate

• Time to climb: 2 to 3 hours (one way)

• Best time to visit: Monsoon and winter (July to February)

On your way to the ascent you meet waterfalls, cute little wooden bridges, and narrow pathways along the forest. You hear chirping birds, and at times, monkeys or colorful butterflies cross your way. The sight from the top of the hills is simply elating - stretched green everywhere with a sweeping view of the Sahyadri ranges. 

Important tip: Good trekking Shoes, Water, and Don't trek alone.

2. Hidden Forest Trails

Don’t like steep climbs? No issue! Asangaon itself has quiet hillsides down the other side of Mahuli – hills that allow for wandering along isolated trails. These narrow trails are fringed with local farms, tiny ponds, and patches of thick forest down the way: great for natural photography or peaceful walks.

Some of the paths are frequented by people from nearby villages. You might meet with their friendliness as they engage you or in some cases, maybe even offer you some fruits from their farms! 

Local Life: Slow and Simple

Life in Asangaon moves at its natural pace. Most of these amicable folk work in agriculture or little trade. It is charming to watch the villagers go about their simple daily life — drawing water from wells, tending animals, or walking to the market. 

If you are fortunate, visit the village haat: fresh from the farm, with handmade products and juicy snacks. Organic, affordable; very colorful! 

And, yes, local treats to try include:

• Poha, a breakfast dish made from beaten rice.

• Misal Pav.

• Kokum sherbet, a very refreshing beverage.

Bird Watching and Wildlife

The forests and wetlands around Asangaon attract many birds and small creatures. If you love birds, take your binoculars with you on an early morning trip:

• King fishers

• Bulbuls

• Parrots

• Egrets

• Peacocks (if you’re lucky!)

In the deeper parts of the forest, there are reported sightings of porcupines, mongooses, and, on occasion, leopards. However, these animals do not generally dwell in the areas where human beings linger, thus they tend to be scarcer.
