What is Bada Bagh?

Bada Bagh, meaning "Big Garden", is a royal memorial ground where the cenotaphs or beautiful sandstone structures in honor of Jaisalmer's kings and queens stand. Each cenotaph, usually called a chhatri, is a dome-shaped pavilion with a number of intricately carved pillars. They are lined up, looking down on the golden desert. As the last rays of the sun hit these monuments, they glow like they're made of fire.

The Bada Bagh was built totally in the 16th century. It was set up by Maharawal Jait Singh and completed by his son Lunakaran. It began as a garden complex but slowly became a royal cremation ground devoted to members of the Bhatti dynasty, rulers, and their families.
