Amalapuram: Coconut Groves, Canals, and Coastal Charm

Travel destinations in India that come to mind usually are Goa, Kerala, or Jaipur. Very few people would have heard of, let alone been to, a small yet tranquil town at the southeast corner of Andhra Pradesh. This is Amalapuram-an under-discovered town. Known for its beautiful green coconut groves, calm canals, and coastal beauty, the very essence of this small town promises to offer an escapade for travelers who are in search of peace and easy access to nature and culture. Let's take a closer look at what makes Amalapuram a destination worth exploring.

Where is Amalapuram?

Amalapuram lies in Konaseema, a region in the state of Andhra Pradesh, in East Godavari district. Nestled in a pretty delta formed by the Godavari River, the area lies near the Bay of Bengal.  Amalapuram is a not-crowded city, thus the uniqueness of it. It is a place away from the din of city life. Here is where the slow pace of life begins, with nature, tradition, and simplicity being part and parcel of everyday life.

Why Visit Amalapuram?

1. Endless Coconut Groves

Apart from the greenery, the first thing noticeable about the place is the land filled with taller coconut trees getting swayed in the cool breeze. Coconut farming is a lifestyle in the region, and these trees are seen everywhere, lining the roads, beside the canals, and around houses.  Amidst this serene and picturesque environment, once in a while, it feels like you've stepped into a different world. Whether walking, on a bicycle, or driving around, the view never fails to refresh you.

2. Beautiful Canals and Backwaters

The canals have given way to the comparison between Amalapuram and Kerala. With the Godavari breaking up into a plethora of tiny streams and canals, which course through the countryside, these waterways are essential in farming and beautification.  In the early morning or late in the afternoon, you can take a boat ride along these canals. The sky and coconut trees shimmering in the water create a picture-perfect scene. It's serene and soothing for any nature lover and photographer alike.

3. Rich Culture and Traditions

One can see that the people of Amalapuram take pride in their culture. One can find traditional houses, temples, and festivities vivaciously celebrated. One of the many temples is the famous Appanapalli Sri Satyanarayana Swamy Temple near Amalapuram. It is an important spiritual center and is thronged by many devotees from surrounding towns. The temple architecture, peaceful environment and spiritual feeling, make it really worth visiting.

Top Things to Do in Amalapuram

1. Visit Appanapalli Temple

The temple is about 20 km away from Amalapuram, dedicated to Lord Satyanarayana, one of the manifestations of Lord Vishnu. This temple is quiet, and the surrounding area is beautiful. If interested in local customs and beliefs, then this should be on your must-visit list.

2. Explore Konaseema Region

Konaseema is, because of its beauty, what people call "God's Own Creation." Spend some time visiting the small villages close by such as Ravulapalem, Razole, and Mummidivaram to immerse yourself in rural life and farm culture. The sights show paddy fields, banana plantations, and traditional houses.

3. Boat Rides and Canal Walks

Hiring a local fisherman or guide for a boat ride is an option. Many locals offer simple wooden craft to ferry one on a peaceful ride through the canals. But if boating is not in your preference, simply taking a gentle stroll by the banks of the canals is also relaxing.

4. Enjoy Local Food

Do not miss out on local delicacies. Rice forms the mainstay of diet here, and coconuts are generously used in cooking. You should try:

  • Pappu (dal) and steamed rice

  • Gongura pachadi (sorrel leaf chutney)

  • Fish curry made with drum fish (from local waters)

  • Coconut-based sweets and local snacks

The food here is otherwise simple yet spicy and aromatic.

5. Attend Local Festivals

When you visit around Sankranti or Ugadi, you will see the town in full swing. Houses are decorated with flowers and with rangoli. The people wear traditional attire and cook special dishes. It gives a rare insight into the very low brow approach towards tradition by the locals in their daily lives.

Best Time to Visit

From October till March is the best time to visit Amalapuram. The weather during these months is cooler and very pleasant. Summers from April to June are very hot, with temperatures crossing 40°C. The monsoon season, from July to September, is characterized by heavy rainfall, which is a hindrance for the tourists, although it makes the surroundings greener.

Travel Tips

  • Be modestly dressed while visiting temples or villages.

  • Respect local customs: Learn to say please and thanks, and talk to people before taking pictures of them or inside the temples.

  • Drink plenty of water, particularly during the summer.

  • Learn a few Telugu words: More people will understand simple Hindi or English, but people will appreciate when you say a few simple words like namaskaram for hello or dhanyavadamulu for thank you.
