Augharnath Temple: Freedom, Faith, and Forgotten Flames

Standing amidst the hustle of one of India's most populous cities, namely Meerut in Uttar Pradesh, the temple serves as a place to visit for the worshippers as well as a mute witness to India's freedom struggle. Here exists the Augharnath Temple, popularly known as Kali Paltan Mandir, wherein history mingles with religion.

Why It’s Called the Kali Paltan Mandir

Kali Paltan was borrowed from the British past when Meerut stood out as one of the biggest military bases. British used to call the Indian soldiers stationed here "Kali Paltan" since "kali", meaning "black", connoted the "blackness" of their uniforms. 

These same soldiers took an active part in the revolt of 1857, which was called the first war of independence by India. Not only was the shrine a place of worship, but it also became the secret rendezvous point for all the freedom fighters, planning and message passing unannounced alerting the British.

Entering Augharnath Temple will take you to a prestigious site that is much more than a place for worship. It is not as luxurious as most big temples, and has an ancient charm about it. There is a faint smell of sandalwood and flowers and the jingle of bells is mingled with the hum of prayers.

A part of the temple complex lies a martyr memorial dedicated to the martyrs of 1857 revolt. It is a small corner full of plaques and statues that spell out the tale of very brave soldiers who fought for their nation against the British. Reminds one that freedom did come at a premium.

• Major Mandir - The deity is that of Lord Shiva. In the same sanctum, Shivling holds flowers and puja offerings from devotees.

• Martyrs' Memorial - A spot, which is dedicated to shahrıat sons and civilians who lost their lives in 1857.

• Freedm Struggle Artifacts - A few displays and boards shall tell the tale of the revolt and Meerut's role in it.

The Freedom Connection

On May 1857, the Sepoy Mutiny started in Meerut, and Augharnath Temple was in the hub of that historic moment. According to the legend, the temple was a place of gathering for soldiers under the guise of worship; instead, they were scheming the revolt. Prasad (offerings) were used as a means for passing messages, and the priests of the temple formed a silent part of this system.

• By train: Meerut Cantt and Meerut City railway stations are the closest ones.

• By road: There are good road connections from Meerut to Delhi and other close cities.

• By air: Delhi airport is the nearest, about 90 km away.
