The outer walls are thick and massive and built of strong red sandstone. The traces of Mughal-style architecture can also be observed inside: arched gates, secret passageways, and underground chambers signifying more mystery added to your walk. 

Some walls still bear the scars of the old wars. Bullet marks, chipped stones, and crumbled edges remind us that this fort has seen its share of chaos. 

Echoes of War

Among the better-known episodes in the fort's history was the Battle of Aligarh during the Second Anglo-Maratha War of 1803. It was here that French-trained Indian troops under Perron attempted to resist the advance of the British army under Lord Gerard Lake.

The thick walls of the fortress, heavy with defenses, and the strong resistance, the fort finally succumbed to fierce fighting with the British. The fort had witnessed canons, gunpowder, trenches - it saw it all.

And yet, it survived.

• Entry: There is no well-defined ticketing system. Since it is within AMU, abide by the timing and rules of the university.

• Best Time to Visit: The period between October and March is just great. The weather is nice, and with the soft winter sun, the fort looks lovely.

• How to Reach: Aligarh has very good train and road connections. The fort is a short auto ride from the main railway station.

• Local Food Tip: Savor those famous Aligarh sohan halwa and kebabs. There are multiple small eateries around the fort that serve hot freshly made food.

• Wear comfortable shoes-the stone paths can be uneven.

• Bring water, especially in summer.
