If you only have one day to experience a safari, the Ngorongoro Crater is the perfect choice. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to one of the densest concentrations of wildlife in Africa, including lions, elephants, hippos, buffalo, and even the rare black rhino.
Your journey begins early in the morning from Arusha. You’ll drive through the scenic Great Rift Valley before reaching the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where you’ll descend over 600 meters into the crater for a full-day game drive. After a picnic lunch by the hippo pool, you’ll continue spotting wildlife before returning to Arusha in the evening.
This is the ideal trip for travelers with limited time who still want a chance to see the Big Five in their natural habitat.
Day Trip Itinerary
Morning: Pick up from your hotel in Arusha (around 6:00 AM). Drive to Ngorongoro Conservation Area (approx. 3–4 hours). Descend into the crater for a game drive, spotting elephants, lions, wildebeest, buffalo, and more.
Midday: Stop for a picnic lunch at the hippo pool, surrounded by spectacular views.
Afternoon: Continue your game drive, then ascend the crater and drive back to Arusha. Drop-off in the evening.
